A great-looking vinyl banner starts long before it ever hits the printer — it starts with properly prepared artwork. Whether you're promoting a grand opening, a sale, or an event in Petaluma, a few simple file prep steps will make sure your banner prints crisp, clean, and eye-catching from a distance.
Choose the Right File Format
For the sharpest results, send us a vector file whenever possible — .PDF, .AI, or .EPS. Vector artwork scales to any banner size without losing quality. If you only have a raster image (like a photo), a high-resolution .PNG or .JPG can work, but it needs to be large enough at the final print size. Avoid low-res images pulled from a website, since they'll look pixelated when blown up.
Set the Right Resolution
Because banners are viewed from a distance, they don't need the same ultra-high resolution as a business card. Aim for about 100 to 150 dots per inch (DPI) at the final printed size. That keeps the file manageable while still looking sharp up close and crystal-clear from across the street.
Include Bleed & Safe Margins
Add a bleed — extra artwork that extends past the final cut edge — of about 1 to 2 inches on all sides. This guarantees no white borders show if the cut shifts slightly. Just as important, keep all text and key logos inside a safe margin, at least 2 to 3 inches from the edge, so nothing gets trimmed off or hidden by grommets.
Use the Correct Color Mode
Design in CMYK color mode, not RGB. Banners are printed with eco-solvent inks that use CMYK, so converting from RGB can cause unexpected color shifts. If you're not sure how your colors will translate, send us your file and we'll review it before printing.
